Getting seed potatoes ready for planting

In this part of the World most potatoes are planted from around the third week of April onwards

To get the best crops :

• always plant healthy certified seed potatoes
• store seed as cool as possible prior to sprouting
• set seed up to sprout (chit) about 6 weeks before the intended planting time
• the best conditions for sprouting are :
  1. as much light as possible
  2. as cool as possible (4-6 degrees Celsius)
  3. good ventilation

Keep an eye open for aphids on the sprouts, and if planting is delayed keep the seed potatoes as cool as possible with good ventilation.
